2010 NM Legislative Session
On Thursday, February 18th, the 2010 NM Legislative Session came to a close. Its focus was to address the state’s budget, including NM’s $700 million deficit. Because a number of budgetary matters were not completed, a special session is anticipated to begin on Wednesday, February 23rd. It will deal exclusively with budgetary items. As details emerge, we will provide them.
In its efforts to protect life, marriage and family, TVAC-NM lobbied and informed subscribers about 3 issues: Same Day Voter Registration, Domestic Partnership, and Embryonic Stem Cell Research. Without your immediate and consistent contact of NM legislators, none of this would have been achieved. Thank you for your essential participation in our legislative process!
In review, all 3 measures, none of which SHOULD have been addressed during a fiscal session, were defeated:
• HB 123/SB 161 Same Day Voter Registration were tabled in House and Senate committees.
• SB 183 Domestic Partnership, crafted to result in same-sex marriage, was tabled by the Senate Finance Committee.
• SB 166 Biomedical Research Act (Embryonic Stem Cell Research) was never heard on the House floor.
